When Cody, the yellow lab, kept after a spot on his leg, his owner, Jessica, got worried.
It was probably an inch thick, at least, and then he was always paying attention to his foot, and it was really red and kind of angry looking.
Vets at the University of Pennsylvania determined Cody's infection was caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, MRSA (MERR suh).
It's only been in the last ten to fifteen years that the multiply drug resistant strains, MRSA, have become a problem in pets.
Staph infections, including the antibiotic resistant types, are more common in people.
Therefore, when we find staph aureus-causing infections, or MRSA-causing infections, in dogs and cats, we often suspect that there's been a transmission from a person to the pet.
About one-third of people have staph on their skin or in the nose, so it's not hard for a pet to acquire a bug like this.
Just the normal snuggling with one's pet, and especially if they're licking your body or your face are good ways to transmit staph.
And if the staph remains on them, it can come back to you. If you have a current MRSA (merr suh) infection, you can help break the cycle by asking someone to handle your pet's daily care, cover up your wounds and limit contact with your pet 'til you're healed.
We kind of have to buck up in those situations and realize it's going to be temporary.
But necessary to preserve your pet's good health. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
