Fluffy is the Dressendorfer's family pet and is usually the center of attention. But their first experience with a family pet turned out to be a nightmare. This is Coco—a chocolate lab that doesn't look aggressive, but don't let those cute, little puppy eyes fool you.
Within the first week, this dog we named Coco, bit my son, Jack, and drew blood in his arm and considering that the dog was only 10 weeks old.
Biting wasn't the only problem. Coco had food aggression issues and was extremely territorial.
The thought of a dog hurting my children or hurting another child in the neighborhood, we had to make the decision that we couldn't have the dog in the house anymore.
Experts say aggression like that should never be overlooked.
And they will escalate. If it just starts with a mild growl, that growl could go to a snap. And that snap can go to a bite.
Dog barking.
But not all aggression is dangerous. Sometimes it's a simple greeting to another dog. And sometimes aggression stems from a medical problem. That's why it's important to speak to your veterinarian first.
We've got to establish a diagnosis before we set out a course of therapy, and then we're talking a veterinarian who is Board Certified in animal behavior.
Sarah's new family dog isn't dangerously aggressive, but he does have obedience issues. She's working with a certified dog trainer to ensure aggression never becomes a problem again. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
