    Diamond Pet Food Recall Expands

    Dry Puppy Food Recalled Because of Salmonella Contamination

    May 1, 2012 -- Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food has been recalled after tests detected salmonella bacteria in the product.

    The new recall is the third in a month for Diamond. The company previously recalled its Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice and its Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul adult light formula dog foods.

    No dog or human illnesses have been reported. People can become infected from salmonella-contaminated dog food if they handle the food and do not thoroughly wash their hands.

    The recalled puppy food was distributed in 12 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

    However, the products may have been sold in other states through "pet food channels," according to a Diamond news release.

    A pet with salmonella food poisoning may be tired and slow moving. It may have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets show only poor appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can infect other animals or humans.
