Nutritional Supplements for Dogs, Cats Recalled

July 6, 2010 -- United Pet Group has voluntarily recalled a laundry list of nutritional supplements for dogs and cats due to possible salmonella contamination. The action expands its recent recall of the Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for dogs.

The recalled products, sold nationally, have expiration dates of January 2013 through June 2013, which can be found imprinted on the right side of the product label. Laboratory testing found that some lots of these products, in tablet and powdered form, may be contaminated with salmonella. The company has recalled the supplements out of caution, and the FDA is aware of the recall.

Pets infected with salmonella may be lethargic and experience symptoms such as diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Death can result in severe cases. Some infections may not cause symptoms. 

Infected pets can pass on the bacteria to other animals and people, even if they don’t show symptoms. If your pet has eaten the recalled product and has symptoms, contact your veterinarian. 

People who handle the products can also become infected with salmonella and should always wash their hands after handling the products.
